The frozen wilderness of Canada's North has long been the setting for stories of survival, isolation, and mystery.

In this episode of Down the Crooked Path, Amanda Joy explores the legend of The Mad Trapper of Rat River. What began as a remote trapping dispute quickly escalated into one of the largest and most extraordinary manhunts in Canadian history, drawing law enforcement, Indigenous trackers, and determined search parties deep into the unforgiving northern wilderness.

As the pursuit unfolded, so did the mystery surrounding the man at its centre. Who was Albert Johnson? Where did he come from? And how did he repeatedly evade capture in one of the harshest environments on Earth?

Nearly a century later, the Mad Trapper's true identity has never been confirmed, and his story continues to blur the line between documented history and enduring legend.

As always, this episode isn't about proving every theory. It's about exploring the people, the history, and the mystery that continue to echo across Canada's North.

Turn down the lights, bundle up, and come with us down the crooked path.
