Part 01 of our four-part series on the Sixties Scoop begins by examining the policies and ideology that made the mass removal of Indigenous children possible.

In this episode of Canadian Creepies, Valerie and Amanda trace how Canada's Residential School system evolved from policy into practice. We explore the laws that gave the government the power to forcibly remove children from their families, the role of Duncan Campbell Scott in making attendance compulsory, and the devastating reality faced by parents who could be fined or imprisoned simply for trying to keep their children at home.

Through the powerful words of survivors, we examine what happened the moment children arrived at residential schools. Hair was cut, names were taken away, languages were forbidden, and siblings were separated. These were not isolated acts of cruelty but part of a deliberate system designed to erase identity, culture, language, and family connections.

This episode also shares the extraordinary courage of Indigenous families and communities who resisted these policies by hiding their children, challenging the law, and refusing to let their cultures disappear.
