In 2010, Colonel David Russell Williams — once one of Canada’s most respected military leaders — was revealed to be something far darker. A decorated commander of Canadian Forces Base Trenton, Williams shocked the nation when an extensive investigation uncovered a chilling double life: years of secret break-ins, fetish burglaries, and ultimately the rape and murder of two women in Ontario. What began as a trusted public servant became one of Canada’s most disturbing and confounding criminal cases.

In this episode, we trace his rise and fall — from elite pilot and commander to federal prisoner — and explore how someone entrusted with authority hid a haunting pattern of violence right under everyone’s feet. We focus on the impacts on victims, the investigation that cracked the case, and the public reckoning that followed.

We also couldn’t help but reflect on our current case, the shooting of Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis, and the shared cultural currents that tie Canadians and Minnesotans together — from values of community connection to the shock that comes when violence touches ordinary lives.
